An important 19th century Hemba male ancestor figure (singiti) from the Mambwe region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, carved in hardwood and displaying the powerful sculptural presence characteristic of traditional Hemba ritual carvings.

Hemba ancestor figures were created to honour revered lineage founders and spiritual guardians. These sculptures were kept within ancestral shrines and used in ceremonial contexts, serving as intermediaries between the living and ancestral world.

This example, affectionately nicknamed “Tony,” possesses a striking presence with the elongated neck, contemplative facial features, and poised stance typical of classical Hemba carving. The hands rest at the abdomen holding a cylindrical form — a symbolic gesture often associated with authority, fertility, and ancestral continuity.

The figure displays a beautiful aged patina and surface wear, consistent with age and handling, enhancing its sculptural character and authenticity. The elongated proportions and balanced stance create a piece that is both spiritually evocative and visually compelling.
