A brilliantly unusual handmade castle-shaped bookcase and vinyl record storage unit, finished in a wonderfully bold combination of bright red, blue and natural wood.

Part bookcase, part record rack and part piece of functional folk art, this is certainly not your average shelving unit.

The square tower-like construction features open storage compartments on all four sides, many of which are perfectly proportioned for 12-inch vinyl records and LPs. Records can be displayed face-on or stored together within the individual cubbies, making this a particularly fun alternative to conventional record storage.

Its most distinctive feature is undoubtedly the top. Bright blue castellated sides wrap around the upper platform, transforming the entire piece into an oversized architectural castle tower. Combined with the vivid red side panels and exposed timber edging, it has a playful Postmodern / Memphis-inspired feel despite appearing to have been individually handmade rather than commercially produced.

At just 60 × 60 cm, it also provides a surprising amount of accessible storage from a relatively compact footprint. Positioned centrally in a room, the shelving can be approached from multiple sides, making it particularly effective as a freestanding vinyl library, record-store display, bookcase or room divider.

A genuine one-off for someone who likes their furniture a little less sensible.

Condition

Good vintage / previously used condition with visible signs of age and use.

There are various surface marks, scratches, edge wear and small areas of loss to the coloured finish, alongside some previous writing/markings internally. Given the handmade nature of the piece, there are also irregularities to its construction and finish.

These have been left intact as part of the object’s character. Please refer closely to the photographs.
