A particularly elegant mid-century double wardrobe by Alfred Cox, retailed by Heal’s and dating from the 1950s to early 1960s.

The wardrobe has a beautifully restrained British modernist design, with a tall rectangular cabinet raised on slender tapered legs. The exterior displays especially attractive figured walnut veneers, giving the otherwise minimalist form a rich decorative character. Fine timber edging, simple turned wooden handles and dark exposed hinges complete the understated design.

Opening the two full-height doors reveals a practical fitted interior, divided between a full-length hanging compartment with metal rail and a series of shelves to the opposite side. This makes it considerably more useful than many period wardrobes while retaining relatively compact proportions.

Condition

Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with a piece of this period. There is surface wear, light marking and minor edge wear to the cabinet and doors, visible in the photographs. The figured veneers retain a particularly attractive colour and grain, and the wardrobe presents very well overall.
