Mid-Century Teak Extending Dining Table by Beithcraft | Rare Scottish Modernist Design | 183cm

An exceptionally stylish and unusually designed mid-century extending dining table by Beithcraft, beautifully refinished and displaying an almost Danish modern quality in both its proportions and detailing.

This is a particularly striking Beithcraft design. While Scottish-made, the table has a distinctly Scandinavian feel, with its restrained profile, warm teak, beautifully tapered legs and exceptionally clean architectural lines. The gently sculpted junctions between the legs and frame are especially elegant, giving the table a light, refined appearance despite its generous proportions.

One of the most attractive details is the long recessed decorative line running along the apron, framed by softly rounded teak edging. It is a subtle feature, but one that gives the table considerably more character than many conventional British extending tables of the period.

The table incorporates a clever self-storing extension leaf beneath the top. The two halves pull apart to reveal the concealed leaf, which folds out into position to increase the table from a practical 138 cm to 183 cm (6 ft). This makes it equally useful as an everyday four-to-six-seat table or a larger dining table when entertaining.

The table has been carefully refinished, bringing back the warmth and depth of the teak while retaining its vintage character. The resulting finish highlights the simplicity of the design and the quality of the timber.

A beautiful, slick and incredibly rare Beithcraft design, and an excellent choice for someone wanting British mid-century furniture with the visual lightness and sophistication normally associated with Danish modern pieces.

As an original mid-century piece, some minor traces of age and previous use remain, but these are consistent with its vintage character. Overall, it presents particularly well.
