A striking vintage Indonesian hand-carved hardwood wall mask, dating from approximately the 1970s.

Beautifully carved from a richly toned hardwood, the mask depicts a serene figure wearing an elaborate traditional headdress. The sculptural crown is particularly impressive, with sweeping foliate forms, a carved flower motif and deeply worked detailing that creates wonderful depth and shadow.

The elongated features, almond-shaped eyes and composed expression are characteristic of decorative carving associated with Bali and Indonesia, making this a particularly atmospheric piece of vintage Southeast Asian craftsmanship.

The warm reddish-brown timber has developed a lovely depth of colour with age, while the hand-carved surface retains the subtle irregularities and toolwork that give the piece its character.

A substantial decorative wall piece that works brilliantly amongst mid-century, bohemian and eclectic interiors, or simply displayed alone as a piece of sculptural folk art.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear, small marks and variations to the finish. There are some scratches and signs of use visible on closer inspection, particularly around the headdress and face.

These are consistent with its age and handmade nature and do not detract from the overall appearance.
