A wonderfully characterful vintage Indonesian hand-carved wooden figure, featuring a striking elongated face decorated with hand-painted red, green and black detailing.

The unusually tall, narrow form gives the piece an almost totemic appearance, with deeply carved facial features, closed eyes and bold symmetrical motifs running across the forehead, cheeks, nose and mouth. The figure stands independently on its original carved pedestal base, making it an especially sculptural decorative object.

The combination of the pale natural timber and aged painted decoration gives it a fantastic folk-art quality. Areas of rubbing, fading and wear to the paint have developed naturally over time, adding considerably to its character rather than leaving it feeling overly polished or contemporary.

Condition

Good vintage condition with visible age-related wear throughout. There is rubbing and fading to the painted decoration, surface marks, scratches and areas of wear around the edges and base.

The reverse retains a dark painted finish with the hand-worked surface of the timber clearly visible.

The aged finish is an important part of the piece’s character and presentation.
