A beautiful antique French Maëlzel mechanical metronome, housed in a traditional pyramid-shaped wooden case with its original brass maker’s plaque.

The front plaque is marked “Metronome Maëlzel – Paris”, while the internal tempo scale carries the traditional Italian musical markings including Largo, Larghetto, Adagio, Andante, Allegro and Presto. The removable front panel reveals the mechanical pendulum and adjustable sliding weight.

The warm aged timber, brass fittings and wonderfully architectural shape make this a particularly decorative example, whether displayed alongside musical instruments, books or other antique curiosities.

Most importantly, the mechanism is currently in working condition, adding considerably to its appeal over purely decorative examples.

Condition

Good antique condition with an attractive aged patina throughout. There are various surface marks, scratches, small knocks and areas of wear consistent with its age and use. The metal components display some oxidation and age-related patination. The removable front panel and winding key are present.

The metronome has been tested and is currently working.

Given its age, I would still describe the mechanism as working at the time of listing rather than guaranteeing long-term accuracy or continuous operation.
